Why Sub-Irrigation Matters

Sub-irrigation is more than just a watering method; it's a fundamental shift in how plants receive hydration. Traditional top watering, while common, can lead to a host of problems. Overwatering is the biggest killer of indoor plants, suffocating roots and creating conditions where root rot and disease flourish. Additionally, top watering can contribute to pest issues, as the consistently moist topsoil becomes a breeding ground for pests like fungus gnats.

Ambius best practice sub-irrigation has been developed to offer the smart and convenient solution. By delivering water to a reservoir at the bottom of the container, it allows plants to draw up moisture as needed, mimicking their natural process. This precise and efficient method ensures optimal hydration, reduces water waste, and promotes healthier, more resilient plants that in turn promote healthy indoors.

How Sub-Irrigation Works: A Simple Explanation

Think of sub-irrigation as giving your plants their own personal drinking straw. This clever watering method utilizes a reservoir at the base of the container. A plant in the grow pot sits in the container, just above the water reservoir. A specially designed wick is placed in contact with the plant's roots. When water is added to the reservoir, this wick acts as a conduit, drawing moisture upwards via capillary action. The plant through the root system can then absorb water as it needs it, resulting in a consistent level of hydration and eliminating the stress of inconsistent watering and the fluctuations of overwatering and underwatering that can stress plants

The Ambius Sub-Irrigation Advantage

Ambius has long been at the forefront of implementing sub-irrigation solutions. We understand that it's not just about the technology but also how it's applied. Our expertise ensures that sub-irrigation is integrated seamlessly into our plantscaping designs, maximizing its benefits.

  • Optimal Plant Health: Sub-irrigation provides consistent moisture, promoting strong root growth and reducing the risk of root rot and disease. This leads to healthier, more vibrant plants that enhance any indoor space.
  • Water Conservation: By delivering water directly to the root zone, sub-irrigation minimizes water usage, making it an environmentally responsible choice.
  • Improved Maintenance: Sub-irrigation systems require less frequent watering, reducing the time needed for each plant. The water is directed directly into the reservour via a tube that eliminates the need to remove the topping. This also makes it less intrusive and quicker watering, especially valuable in corporate offices or open plan settings.
  • Pest Control: Sub-irrigation helps to keep the top layer of soil drier, making it less attractive to certain pests.
