AECOM is a global provider of professional technical and management support services to a broad range of markets, including transportation, facilities, environmental, energy, water and government. Their Perth CBD green star office offers staff the best of working environments. The simple, yet beautifully designed interior plantscaping of this building, not only helps improve air quality, but also offers workers a greener, healthier and more productive working environment.

The brief

With a vision to enhance and sustain the world’s built, natural, and social environments, AECOM say their greatest resource is their people and in order to attract and keep the best in the business, AECOM pride themselves on providing offices that are healthy, productive and aesthetically pleasing. Their Perth office is no exception. In designing and retrofitting this building to four green star ratings, sustainable strategies were used across the board. To help make their building greener on the inside, Ambius were called in to do their interior plantscaping.

The solution

Employee comfort and productivity is central to the design of this green star rated building in the heart of Perth. Plants have been specially designed into work areas to help improve air quality and improve productivity. The interior plantscaping includes mass planting of over seven hundred individual Mother-in-law’s tongue (Sansevieria) plants and more than ten tonne of white pebbles. These were installed into AECOM’s own cabinet top planters and striking wooden planter boxes, specially designed for the purpose.

The results

The planting of Mother-in-law’s tongue throughout the building en masse has a striking and dramatic effect. Plants included in breakout areas also help create a relaxed atmosphere for workers taking time out of their busy workday. The plant Mother-in-law’s tongue was not just a practical choice for its hardiness, but also provides a colourful, textured, linear design element to the modern AECOM interiors. The overall result is a healthy, green interior that helps improves AECOM worker’s productivity and enjoyment.
